University Coaching & Academic Mentoring
Why Choose UCAM?
By Jade Severson
As the landscape of higher education changes and more students question the value of a college education, what makes a liberal arts education a worthwhile investment?
Many students and families choose Southern Oregon University because of UCAM (University Coaching and Academic Mentoring). For 13 years, UCAM has empowered students with support, inclusion, and belonging as they work towards undergraduate degrees. Investing in the personalized coaching UCAM offers not only enables academic success but also energizes self-awareness, builds powers of connection, and increases adaptability, all valuable skills in a rapidly changing world.
While coaching has become more prevalent in recent years, UCAM’s model remains a unique offering at a West-Coast public university. Our focus on building strong relationships with students is made possible by a student-to-coach ratio of 18:1. Students meet with the same professional coach weekly for personalized meetings, allowing students to feel comfortable as they meet the challenges of academia. We are also exceptional in the degree of service we provide to our families. We onboard families through an orientation program, develop relationships with them as we communicate about student concerns and successes, and serve as their primary point of contact at the university.
UCAM is committed to serving all students. We approach our work with students through the lens of neurodiversity. Coaches provide guidance around accessibility and accommodations and help students find community, pride, and belonging in their differences.
