UCAM parent testimonial: David Lake

The phrase “life changing” is tossed around frequently in everyday life, but rarely does it aptly or accurately describe the experience it is attributed to. The staff, services, and support that Southern Oregon University’s UCAM program provides and delivers to its students is the unquestionable exception to this rule, for it is truly life changing. Our son, a 2023 graduate of SOU (who received a BA in education with a minor in early childhood education and is now working as a teacher), was the fortunate beneficiary of everything UCAM had to offer. Once upon a time, we were unsure if our son’s path included college at all, but then we learned of SOU and the UCAM program and doors that once seemed closed were thrown wide open. Our son was paired with Jade Severson as his coach in his first year and together, year after year, they tackled every challenge that presented itself. Jade’s support, guidance, and kindness proved invaluable and we, as parents, watched with joy and pride as our son developed and blossomed into the person he has become – confident, caring, capable and yes, well-educated. Whether or not intended, the UCAM program goes above and beyond in terms of what it provides its students, including social and emotional support. Jade may have started out as just our son’s UCAM coach, but she quickly grew into a friend, mentor, and supporter who imparted invaluable life and self-advocacy skills along with her rock-solid academic support and guidance. Jade and UCAM helped make our son the person he is today and we could not be happier or more grateful. Life changing indeed.
