University Coaching & Academic Mentoring
Graduate Spotlight: Justin Cabral
By Jade Severson
Name: Justin Cabral
Major at SOU: Sustainability
Where are you working? How does your work connect to your education at SOU?
I’ve been working at Rusted Gate Farm for the past two years. It’s a non-profit farm focused on creating community resources and testing farming practices that are sustainable both environmentally and financially for small farms. I worked at the Farm at SOU for several years and took classes that connected to agriculture as often as I could. That experience helped me get my current job and made me realize I had a passion for farming, which before my time at SOU I had not considered as a career for myself.
Plans for the next five years:
I’ll keep working at Rusted Gate most likely. I really like my job and hope to stick with it as it expands its programs in the future.
Anything you learned in UCAM that you still remember today?
I feel that UCAM helped me find my feet socially. Before I started SOU and for the first year of college, I wasn’t a very confident person, both socially and academically, and I found a lot of use in having someone I could talk through my week with and get help from when I needed it. I really appreciated having one place that was dedicated to helping me get through whatever was happening, no matter if that was an assignment or just a social situation I wanted to talk through with someone.
